THE FUNDAMENTALS OF ANATOMY & FUNCTIONAL APPROACH
Weekend Immersion: 14 Hours - Language: English 🇬🇧
From 18 to 20 September 2026
We are delighted to welcome you to Pure Flow Art Studio to share with you the fundamental principles of Yin Yoga as developed by its founders, Paul and Suzee Grilley.
Over the course of the weekend, we will delve deeper into the Anatomical and Mechanical aspects of Yin Yoga, distinguishing between the connective tissues and musculoskeletal segments that underlie the movements during practice. We will also explore the 9 levels of Functional Description that allow us to cultivate and refine an introspective mind, from mechanics to psychology, through the practice of Yin Yoga.
Alongside the theory, we share unique Yin Yoga practices from an anatomical perspective.
Weekend PROGRAMME
FRIDAY 18 SEPTEMBER - 17.00 - 19.00
PRACTICE - Yin Yoga - Tao Yoga
This class reconnects us with the principles of internal arts. This approach is based on a system designed to gather and conserve Qi/prana, which consists of three phases.
We open the body through various active and passive movements, targeting areas of tension and Qi stagnation.
We relax and loosen up the body to allow Qi/Prana to sink, adopting stationary standing positions.
We collect and gather Qi/Prana in the lower Dantian (lower abdomen), focusing the mind on this area in order to cultivate prolonged passive attention.
SATURDAY 19 SEPTEMBER – 9.00 - 12.00
PRACTICE - Yin Yoga for the Spine - 9.00-10.30
This 2-hour class focuses on the spine, exploring the 6 spine-related movements through the Yin Yoga postural repertoire. Stimulation of the thoracic and lumbar fascia combined with rebound (integration) enables practitioners to open up, release tension in the intervertebral discs, and regain a full, unconstrained range of motion.
THEORY - The 3 Mains Tissus of the Practice - 10.30-12.00
Exploration of the three main tissues related to yoga practice from a Taoist analysis. The three main tissues are muscles, connective tissues, and bones. This understanding will highlight the two restrictions of any range of motion in the body, known as “tension” and compression”, and why we must treat these tissues differently.
LUNCH BREAK – 12-14.00
THEORY - 4 reasons to stimulate our joints - 14.00-15.00
This lecture follows on from the morning presentation and will highlight the four main reasons for targeting and stimulating our joints. Most of our connective tissues are located around the joints, and stimulating them slows tissue degeneration, prevents contractures and joint fixation, and increases hyaluronic acid production.
PRACTICE - Yin Yoga for the Hips - 15.00-17.00
A class that targets the hips and the six directions of the femurs. Yin Yoga is particularly effective for opening up the lower limbs, which are considered Yin, while the torso and arms are considered Yang. This practice will help us reconnect with the main muscle groups in the legs and release tension around the pelvis.
SUNDAY 20 SEPTEMBER – 9.00 - 12.00
PRACTICE - Yin Yoga for the Upper Body - 9.00-10.30
In this sequence, we will explore the Yin Yoga repertoire to open the upper Body, targeting joints such as the shoulders, scapulae, torso, and spine. The practice will promote fascia release and gentle relaxation, encouraging connective tissues to hydrate, lengthen, and reduce tension.
THEORY - The 9 Levels of Functional Description - 10.30-12.00 (part 1)
If we examine the trajectory of yoga in general, it appears as an inward movement, a withdrawal from the periphery towards the center. By redirecting our attention from physical sensations to psychological processes, we open a dialogue within the body-mind complex. Discover the 9 levels of functional description to cultivate and refine your introspective ability towards the body : 1-Bones, 2-Connective Tissues, 3-Muscle, 4-Vascular System, 5-Nervous System, 6-Breath, 7-Qi/Prana, 8-Emotion, 9-Mind
LUNCH BREAK – 12-14.00
THEORY - The 9 Levels of Functional Description - 14.00-15.00 (part 2)

PRACTICE - Yin Yoga & Meditation (The Breath Body) – 15.00 - 17.00
This technique initially involves directing the mind and breath to different parts of the body. In a second phase, the practice involves gathering the three regions (head, torso and lower abdomen) and uniting them into a single entity, so that the breath flows through the body. Conscious attention to the process of autonomous breathing activates the parasympathetic nervous system, reduces stress and provides instant emotional calm.
